Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a great fit for those looking for healing but with a non-invasive approach.
Building upon William Sutherland’s declaration in the 1900’s that, “skull bones move,” osteopathic physician, clinical researcher and Professor of Biomechanics at University of Michigan, Dr. John Upledger founded what would be eventually known as Craniosacral Therapy.
There are two nervous systems often cited, the sympathetic (“fight or flight”) and the parasympathetic (“rest and digest”). The parasympathetic nervous system can also be referred to as the “craniosacral” system due to where in the spinal cord these types of nerve fibers can be located: the cervical/cranial region and the sacral/sacrum. We oftentimes find ourselves “trapped” in the fight or flight, and CST can help to release us from that.
During a session, the therapist will use their hands to explore the craniosacral rhythm and subtle movements of the body to identify any areas of restriction or imbalance. Once these areas are identified, the therapist will work to release the tension and restore proper alignment to the body. Oftentimes, the patient can feel the “unwinding” that is happening, indicating a release and healing is occurring. This treatment is incredibly effective at promoting deep relaxation and reducing stress, making it an excellent choice for individuals who are looking to improve their overall health and wellbeing.
We recommend CST as an alternative to our acupuncture services for those who my be needle-shy. Similar relaxing and calming effects can be experienced, along with similar musculoskeletal benefits, too. Consider this an option and/or adjunct to your current treatment plans should you be seeking help with: migraines, TMD, bruxism (teeth grinding), high blood pressure, stress, anxiety, and so many more.
