Hey ladies – did you know that as women, we’re lucky to have a hormonal cycle!? You’re probably looking at me cross-eyed thinking I’m absolutely nuts.
This is part of the societal issue, I think, that causes some (or most, depending) women to feel resentful of “that time of the month” that signifies their femininity and womanhood. Some of the work I do in my practice is helping women reframe how they view themselves and their womanhood WHILE configuring their diet and lifestyles to foster their hormones favorably. We can’t have one without the other.
That was a little detour, so lets redirect…
Regardless of where you fall on this topic, being a woman is beautiful. Women have been gifted such a calling in life, they have been appointed givers of life. It’s hard to see this when we’re younger and in school just trying to get through the day only to have our friend visit us. Part of the issue there is our lack of connection to the sacred feminine. We didn’t have apps when I was younger and I’m not sure I had the wherewithal to discern that I should write this stuff down in a calendar… because, why?
But now we have these handy applications on our smart phones that can help us along. We can track our symptoms and these algorithms can determine patterns in our cycles that maybe we didn’t even think relevant. Sure, this is all great if we’re looking to get pregnant or just don’t want to be surprised while on vacation, but perhaps there’s more to this?
As of late, the community surrounding women’s health is connoting our hormonal cycles as the “5th vital sign.” Yep, those vital signs the ones they take when you walk into the doctor’s office: blood pressure, temperature, pulse, oxygen/respiration. They are the most superficial of ways to note somebody’s health when they walk into a room before any deep dives are taken. They are an easy way to see if something is amiss off the bat.
Your hormonal cycle does the same. And guess what? Men don’t have one, so their vitality score is missing this extra detail to assuming the full picture.
If you experience painful periods, heavy periods, extreme emotional discontent, etc during your menstrual cycle, there may be something that is amiss. Just knowing this information tells me, even before asking, that there is likely a gastrointestinal dysfunction occurring simultaneously. It’s a chicken or egg thing, but regardless, it tells me a lot and most of which is where we should begin in our plan.
