What’s the deal with glutathione?
Glutathione is what we call the “master antioxidant” because it is an antioxidant that is found in nearly every single cell in the body. It is comprised of three amino acids: glutamine, glycine, and cysteine. Glutathione is so crucial because it protects us and helps us fight oxidative stress.
Let’s face it we live in a toxic world:
EMF
Environmental exposures
The food industry is out of control with chemicals, additives and preservatives in packaged food and whole foods are not promoted
Everyone drinking and eating out of plastic
Microwaves
Emotional stress given current situations
I could go on and on about how toxic our world is, but we have glutathione! We cannot overstate the importance of it!
Glutathione not only takes down and neutralizes free radicals, but it also deals directly with causes of oxidative stress on our cells. It is a cofactor for several antioxidant enzymes, helps with regeneration of Vitamins C and E (antioxidants!!), helps break down chemicals in the body so that they can be excreted by the kidneys, helps to transport mercury out of brain cells, helps to regulate which cells should continue to grow and multiply (proliferation). Glutathione is vital to our mitochondrial function and mitochondrial DNA, which has a direct impact on diseases associated with mitochondrial dysfunction. Glutathione also helps with detoxification of the liver.
Low levels of glutathione are associated with:
Parkinson’s and other neurodegenerative disorders
Pulmonary disease
Immune disease
Cardiovascular disease
Chronic, age-related disease
Liver disease
and the aging process itself
So, how do we increase our glutathione?
Good question! One can work to decrease their toxic load, which in turn decreases the need for glutathione. Decreasing your toxic load may look different for everyone but would include:
Limiting alcohol consumption
Limiting toxic exposures from the environment
Reducing conventionally grown foods or processed foods
Being cognizant of exposures from beauty products
Practicing meditation to reduce emotional stress, etc.
We can also provide specific nutrients that would promote glutathione production, for example supplementing with N-acetylcysteine (NAC) but be sure this is in a plan discussed with your healthcare provider, and the most obvious would be to supplement with glutathione directly. Here at Soleil, we offer intravenous (IV) glutathione pushes which go directly into your bloodstream, and is available to body for use right away.
If you are feeling depleted and need help with detoxification, supplementation with IV glutathione may be right for you!
